We are in the age of information overload. Chances are, you don’t even have time to read this whole article because you have 100 other things to read, listen to, watch, and do. The biggest problem I have seen come out of the never-ending stream of content? Confusion.

You can find evidence for just about anything, so how are you supposed to know what is right, wrong, biased, or just made up? And there is no topic more confusing than nutrition.

Why?

Because we barely understand how food and our bodies work! Remember when we used to think cholesterol in our food (eggs) was evil? What’s that you say? Now I am supposed to eat eggs?!

This same problem comes up with all types of foods. Think about the top 5 “superfoods” you have heard are absolutely the best for your health. Or think about the worst.

Whatever is on your list, chances are, there is evidence both for and against. And rightfully so, because in the end, it is more about what is right for YOU vs. what is “right.”

This isn’t to say that there are no rules. In general, greens are good and fast food is bad...though you could argue that fast food (or processed food) should not even count as food. But the important point is that you are not like everyone else, so every new food you try should be seen as an experiment.

If you look at it this way, then you will not get sucked into the idea of eating “healthy” in general, but rather, eating right for you. Some people do well with beans, some do not. Some people do well with broccoli, some do not. Some people do well with milk, some do not.

Are there trends and tendencies? Yes. But if you start eating the next “perfect” diet and it doesn’t work for you, it’s not your fault! There may just be a problem with some of the food you are eating.

My recommendation: don’t read another weight loss/diet book and instead start keeping track of how your meals make you feel. Feel lethargic and bloated after a meal? Something was in it that your body doesn’t like! If you feel energetic and alive after your next meal, eat that food again!

Keep this up long enough and you will find the diet that is right for you.
